Low, Chee Meng

LOW Chee Meng is a versatile professional with a multifaceted career spanning conducting, education, administration, and saxophone performance in orchestral, chamber, and solo settings. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Music at UCSI University Malaysia, following his tenure as a faculty member and Wind Orchestra Director at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta Canada.

Chee Meng has established himself as a prominent figure in the music community, showcasing his artistry as a conductor, soloist and chamber musician across North America, Europe, and Asia. He was the co-founder and artistic director of the SWATCA U of L High School Honour Band and served as the music director for the South-Western Alberta Youth (SWAY) wind ensemble. In Malaysia, he holds the role of artistic director for the Outreach Youth Band of Malaysia, the nation’s premier youth wind ensemble, after previously serving as its project manager.

His recent engagements include conducting the 2nd Annual Greater Bay Canadian International Schools Honour Band in China, presentation at the World Association for Symphonic Bands & Ensembles (WASBE) and Malaysia Music Education Conference, guest conducted the Thailand Feroci Philharmonic Society Wind Ensemble, and a concerto performance with the Canadian Red Deer Symphony during their 2022/23 season. He also performed at the 2023 North American Saxophone Alliance Region 9 conference, sharing the stage with the renowned saxophonist Claude Delangle from the Paris Conservatoire.

Chee Meng is equally committed to advancing the music community through leadership roles. Since returning to Malaysia in 2022, he has hosted numerous wind and Chinese music instrument-related events and collaborated with several art organizations in Malaysia. His previous contributions include hosting the 2019 Region 9 North American Saxophone Alliance regional conference, serving on the International Committee for the World Saxophone Congress (2006-2009), and as a member of the Asia Saxophone Conference (2019 – present). Additionally, he has represented the Asia Pacific Band Directors’ Association (2007 – 2010) and remains an active member of the North American Saxophone Alliance.

A passionate advocate for music education, Chee Meng has also served as executive director and programs chair of the Canadian Alberta Band Association and was a founding member of the Alberta Music Advocacy Alliance.
